Ottoman İznik tiles are among the most refined and recognizable forms of decorative art in the Ottoman artistic tradition. They take their name from İznik, the main center of their production, and reached their peak particularly between the 15th and 17th centuries. İznik tiles are ceramic products made from a quartz-rich body, decorated with special pigments, and fired using the underglaze technique. Their most distinctive features are the brilliance of their colors and the disciplined composition of their patterns. The Rüstem Pasha Mosque is one of the buildings where some of the finest and most extensive examples of Ottoman İznik tiles can be seen. Built by Mimar Sinan in the 16th century, the mosque’s interior is covered with İznik tiles produced using the underglaze technique, featuring cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and especially coral red. Naturalistic floral motifs such as tulips, carnations, and hyacinths, together with classical rûmi and hatayi patterns, give the space an aesthetic that is both elegant and powerful; in this respect, the mosque is regarded as a unique example reflecting the pinnacle of İznik tile art.
